Rice as Binders: Community Art Exhibition
“Rice as Binder” explored our continuous formation of practices, cultural identities, and personal stories connected to the varieties of rice in our supermarkets. This installation stemmed from the artists’ curiosities about the varied characteristics of different types of rice – such as colour, texture, form, and flavour – and how they may influence the socio-cultural practices around them.
Central to the installation were conversations with three artists who also work with rice in meaningful ways. They include Vijaya Mohan, a rangoli artist who uses rice flour as a daily ritual; David and Peiyi, a chef and social worker duo fostering connections through the classic claypot rice; and Murni and Aqid, advocates of Malay cuisine.
Members of public were invited to participate in this exploration by crafting rice vessels using recycled paper fibers and rice starch as physical binders. These vessels, paired with short stories from participants about their personal connection to rice, will be displayed as part of the installation.
